Instrumentation Senior or Principal Electronics Engineering Associate Join to apply for the Instrumentation Senior or Principal Electronics Engineering Associate role at Berkeley Lab . The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring an Instrumentation Senior or Principal Electronics Engineering Associate to provide expert technical support for electrical and electronic systems within the Advanced Light Source (ALS), focusing on supporting the Accelerator Instrumentation group. This role involves designing, supporting, and testing printed-circuit boards, electronic chassis, wiring harnesses, structured cabling systems, and managing documentation, procurement, fabrication, and testing to ensure system performance. This position requires hands-on experience assembling and troubleshooting integrated electronic equipment, with a background in electronics or electrical engineering, and strong problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will contribute to ALS projects by delivering high-quality technical solutions, mentoring team members, and ensuring reliable implementation of electrical systems. What You Will Do Support electronic device design, including PCB layout, chassis, and wiring, adhering to electrical, mechanical, and thermal constraints. Coordinate with vendors for PCB fabrication, assembly, and mechanical component fabrication. Work with on-site trades for electronics and cabling installation. Assist in designing and installing cable systems, including structured cabling. Test and troubleshoot electronic systems and components on the bench and in the field. Generate and maintain build and test documentation. Collaborate with teams to manage project timelines, budgets, and resources. Use procurement software to purchase parts and equipment. Follow electrical safety standards and protocols, maintaining qualifications such as Qualified Electrical Worker. Communicate effectively and adhere to safety standards. Additional Responsibilities Use tools like cable testers, VNAs, TDRs, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and power meters. Supervise personnel as needed and support non-ALS projects. Mentor entry-level engineering associates. What Is Required Senior Electronics Engineering Associate Bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronics engineering or related field with 5+ years of experience. Strong electronics design, testing, and troubleshooting skills. Knowledge of PCB and mechanical manufacturing processes. Proficiency in PCB layout software (Xpedition, Pads, KiCAD). Knowledge of power distribution, networking, and system integration. Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings. Experience with structured cabling, fiber optics, and electronic components. Project management skills and teamwork experience. Proficiency in CAD tools (AutoCAD, OrCAD, KiCAD). Experience with database management, PLM tools, and QA workflows. Proficient in MS Office suite. Principal Electronics Engineering Associate Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least 7 years of experience. Ability to plan for future bandwidth and system growth. Desired Qualifications Experience with power distribution, electromagnets, and water monitoring systems. Ability to draft mechanical models. Relevant technical certifications. Knowledge of networking hardware and protocols. Salary Senior Associate: $111,000 - $136,000 annually, full range $99,000 - $167,100. Principal Associate: $135,000 - $165,000 annually, full range $119,988 - $202,488. Notes Full-time, 2-year term with potential extension or conversion.
